Dr. David Obura and Mishal Gudka of CORDIO (Coastal Oceans Research and Development) East Africa, supported through the Biodiversity Program, presented a training on the 2017 post-bleaching assessment in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO). The webinar was held on the TNC Reef Resilience platform on 21st July 2017.
The Biodiversity Program is supporting the WIO reef network conduct a post bleaching assessment in six countries in the region (Kenya, Tanzania, Comoros, Seychelles, Mauritius, Madagascar) in response to the call launched by the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) at its 21st General Meeting in Paris (France) to enhance global efforts to assess the impacts of the 2016 coral reef bleaching event.
The webinar detailed the objectives and plan for the regional post-bleaching assessment, and explained the process for selecting sites and methodologies for the post-bleaching surveys. 35 participants from all over the region attended this session.
The next steps in the project involves the selection and finalization of national fieldwork teams, sites, budget and methodology in preparation for fieldwork in September and October as well as the identification of other potential data contributors.
A national coordinator in each of the 6 beneficiary WIO countries will lead the fieldwork and report writing process for their respective countries. CORDIO will lead a half-day meeting at the 10th WIOMSA Symposium on November 2nd to discuss the findings from the national surveys and detail the report writing process.
